Yesterday, November 23, 2018 Angelina and I ventured out around the island town of Skiathos. We discovered that their town has an interesting history, and we enjoyed a climb on slabs of white rocky marble at the beach area next to the apartment. Next, we took a walk around the fortress near the old port and saw the statues and sculptures of philosophers, artists, and a memorial to fallen Greek sailors from the war when a German U-Boat sunk in the sea here. We saw many sea urchins in clear waters and beautiful cactus and pine trees above this rock beach complete with a ladder to enter the sea by.
Here is a bit of history about this island. In Ancient times, the island played a minor role during the Persian Wars. In 1207 the Ghisi brothers captured the island and built the Bourtzi, a small Venetian-styled fortress similar to the Bourtzi in Nafplio, on an islet just out of Skiathos town, to protect the capital from the pirates. Skiathos is an island that is part of the Northern Sporades island group, located in the northwest of the Aegean Sea and it belongs to Greece. Skiathos has a surface area of 61km ² and a population of about 3,300 people.
Our host let us know that during the summer season the population grows to about 50,000 people on the island. I am glad to be here during the off season, as it is not crowded, and is still so beautiful.-Mona
