On Thursday, March 31, 2022 Angelina and I went on the Argosy Boat Tour of Elliott Bay, and it was a gorgeous, sunny day in Seattle. I learned that Seattle is the second largest port for imports/exports and shipping next to L.A., it is also the gateway to Alaska. I saw a ship from the state ferry to Bainbridge Island the day before with shipping containers as big as train cars filled with vehicles. One had a winnebago on top of it and another had a huge truck on top of it. I couldn't see how they were tied on at all. The big white crane is shipped on one piece and is operated by only one person, it is hard to believe. The gray ship with the pointy bow is an ice cutting ship that will go up to Alaska to clear the ice for the big cruise ships. Our tour guide said that 296 cruise ships are scheduled for this season, and that the last two years have really hurt the economy due to the pandemic. There were no cruise ships the first year, and only 90-100 last year.
I wanted to see the old train station and clock tower, as there are some black and white photos in our airbnb that looked like they were of a local clock tower. We could not go all the way up, but the inside of the station was ornate and gorgeous. If we come back and take Amtrak or a bus outside of the area, this is where we would leave from. So classy!
Our tour guide, Lars was a local and told us many interesting facts and information about the area, including the one about Smith Tower. It was completed in 1914, it has 38 stories, is the oldest skyscraper in the city, and was among the tallest skyscrapers outside of N.Y. City at the time of completion. It was also the tallest building on the West Coast for many years.
We loved the boat tour, and Lars was an awesome guide! We highly recommend Argosy Harbor Cruise. -Mona
