Our friend, Rebecca met us at the Metro and we three visited Sainte-Chapelle first on Wednesday, January 16, 2019. Twenty three years ago on my Dad's tip, my friend, Kevin and I ran around Paris looking for this chapel, as it most certainly has the most vibrant stained glass windows we had ever seen. We eventually found it back then, and it was just as Dad had described. This time it was easy, as we had walked past it a few days earlier and we had a local with us. Rebecca told us the history and knew many of the stories depicted in the stained glass windows. The light was perfect and we saw many wondrous colors and patterns low and high. Rebecca spotted the dogs shown on the floor tiles and we all love dogs so...
We learned this from Becky: This chapel was built between 1242 and 1248 on the wishes of King Louis IX (1226-1270) & the future Saint Louis, to house the relics of the Passion of Christ. The most famous of these relics was the Crown of Thorns, acquired in 1239 for a sum that greatly exceeded the cost of the building itself. We did not see the crown, as it only is displayed on particular dates. I loved the vaulted ceilings, the sun through these amazing windows, talking with Becky and Angelina and the figures in blue and gold that looked similar to dancing shapes in Rodin's sculptures. We thank Rebecca for meeting us and giving us a personal tour. 💗 Mona
I really loved this bright and colorful chapel, where there are such beautiful stained glass windows. It may be a small Chapel but it's simply breathtaking and I love all the stories the stained glass windows depict, even though I couldn't find a story I knew. My favorite part of the Chapel was it's rose window where in the center it shows when "Christ returns in glory at the end of Time to judge the dead and living" (that's what the brochure says). There are so many different patterns of the outlines, I love all of the shapes. This was especially fun to see the Chapel with Mom and her friend, we enjoyed the beauty together. -Angelina
