Point Saint-Benezet´s Bridge is one of the sights that inspired me to return to this beautiful city along the Rhone River. There are many stories of this bridge and it is the source of myth and legend. Much of the bridge was washed away in the 17th Century. One legend says that in 1177 a shepherd named Benezet was instructed by angels to build a bridge over the river Rhone and was blessed with superhuman strength to raise a giant lump of rock for it´s construction. We viewed the bridge, and I previously had Angelina listen to the song I learned as a child about the bridge, (Sur le pon d´Avignon). The swans and seagulls were what we watched the most, they are so beautiful.
We walked along the river and meandered back through the town. We found two theaters one was performing ¨Little Red Riding Hood¨ and it looked too scary for Angelina, it was a noir (dark) version, so we passed on that. We discovered a movie theater just around the corner from us, so tomorrow night we will see, Bohemian Rhapsody about the rock group, Queen. It will have English subtitles! We have only seen movies in Australia, Chiang Mai, Thailand and Rome (a private viewing) in English, so we are thrilled when we find cinema in our native language. -Mona
Here are some facts about the bridge:
The Pont Saint-Bénézet, also known as the Pont d'Avignon, is a famous medieval bridge in the town of Avignon, in southern France. A wooden bridge spanning the Rhône between Villeneuve-lès-Avignon and Avignon was built between 1177 and 1185. It originally had a length of some 900 m (980 yd). It was destroyed during the siege of Avignon by Louis VIII of France in 1226 but beginning in 1234 it was rebuilt.
Yesterday was a super fun first day! We got to see the bridge of Avignon an explored around our new city. We looked in cute shops and found a movie theatre. I am surprised at how big this city really is I was under the impression that it was a small village like city. I love it anyway! -Angelina
