October 1, 2018 we took the train and Skyrail up and back to a village named Kuranda, about an hour and a half outside Cairns. We were traveling through and above the oldest continuous rainforest in the world. The railway was quite impressive, and took many man hours to construct, with spectacular views. The waterfall is Barron Falls and when the water is released from the dam it is even more impressive. There are many attractions once you arrive in Kuranda, and we chose the Butterfly Sanctuary. Angelina and I were both fortunate enough to have butterflies land on us, and were able to take some clear photos. My favorite ones were the blue (Ulysses) and the green Cairns Birdwing. We enjoyed the butterfly nursery as well and the many question and answer cards there for some interactive learning. We had a fast ride back down on the Skyrail and saw lush, green tropical forests below. This journey is worth getting up early for and we certainly suggest taking it in on your visit to Cairns. The indigenous culture of the village, are the “Dja-bu-guy”, the tribe of Aboriginal people who lived in the Kuranda region. The present Kuranda village was “Ngunbay”, or place of platypus. We had the privilege to see and hear a native performing the Didgeridoo. The Didgeridoo is a wooden brass instrument thought to have originated in Arnhem Land, Northern Territory, Australia. Researchers have suggested it may be the world's oldest musical instrument, over 40,000 years old. -Mona
The train ride up to Kuranda was super cool. We got to see a water fall. I loved going to the Butterfly Sanctuary and see all the beautiful butterflies. A couple of butterflies were friendly and got on my finger. Kuranda itself was like a mountain town and very laid back even thought Australia is laid back on the whole. The Skyrail was also very fun I loved seeing everything from up high. This day was perfect weather which is good because we wouldn´t want to get blown off the Skyrail! It was such a fun day!-Angelina
