Isle de La Barthelasse

Writer's picture: mnjsalsamnjsalsa

Yesterday, December 22, 2018 we walked to the Isle de La Barthelasse from our apartment. We walked over the Pont Edouard Daladier Bridge and from there we had a sweeping view of the St. Benezet Bridge once again. We crossed through the walls of Avignon and they are quite beautiful in and of themselves. The Avignon City Wall surrounds the city center in a sort of rhombus shape and is 2.7 miles around. The wall offers evidence of the importance of fortifications in 14th century France. We walked along the Rhone on the island to a lush and green parkland, and back in time for the Christmas festivities in the city. The Isle de La Barthelasse is the biggest river island in France, with only 1,000 inhabitants, as it is flood prone. It is situated between two factions of the Rhone, and is quiet and beautiful. I noticed a camping park situated next to the bridge and it sports an Olympic size swimming pool!-Mona

Yesterday, I got to go on the other side of the city, which I had wanted to see. The view of Avignon from there was beautiful. It was nice to walk along the river. I am glad we got to do that! -Angelina
