Gandhi Revisited

Writer's picture: mnjsalsamnjsalsa

We returned once again to the memorial of Mahatma Gandhi. We viewed the site from above this time. The memorial is made out of black marble and is adorned daily with fresh marigolds. The eternal flame is just behind the tomb and is always kept burning. The memorial is called Raj Ghat, or royal platform, and marks the place where he was cremated after his assassination in 1948. Mahatma means ¨Great Soul¨ and was a title bestowed upon him during his lifetime. Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was an Indian activist who was the leader of the Indian independence movement against British rule. Employing nonviolent civil disobedience, Gandhi led India to independence and inspired movements for civil rights and freedom across the world. Our tour guide explained many of the histories surrounding different opinions about this man, and around the event of his assassination. Many things that I did not know, and of course, there are always many sides to any event. These women are the caretakers of this beautiful memorial land. It is fortuitous that we were able to visit this memorial more than once.
