Beaches and Swans

Today Mom and I went down to the port and rented a car for a day so that we could see the wonderful island of Skiathos. Our first beach that we went to is called Kanapista Beach. We didn´t go on the beach but found a great overlook from the top. The second beach we went to was called Vromolimnos Beach. What a mouthful! This beach had really nice sand and it did not have many footprints. Off of the beach there was a little ranch with cows and turkeys. There was one turkey that had it´s feathers open and then the others did the same. Yay turkey´s! The cows were cute too. Our host had told us about a very famous beach called Koukounaries Beach and he said there was a lake that connected to the sea. He also said that in the summer there are many swans there. I wanted so much to see the swans. Koukounaries is the perfect beach for me because there were pine trees and the sea right there. As we were walking on the path to leave our eyes caught the white, black and grey swans. I loved the grey and white swan. It reminded Mom and me of the story, The Ugly Duckling. I am so happy I got to see swans for the first time. They are such beautiful creatures. We finished off with two more beaches; Agios Eleni Beach and Agios Paraskevi Beach. Skiathos has so many beaches and it´s cool to see more even if we can´t swim, (because it is Winter, and cold outside).-Angelina

I had a blast driving these curvy, narrow roads today through pine groves next to the sea. I know that my entire family would love to live here, as it is so similar to the Monterey Peninsula where we all grew up. This town is homey, and it is easy to find your way around, as the port is the orientation point, and it goes up and out from there. To drive the island the small map we were given from the car rental was sufficient, and there is only one main road out of town, so that simplifies things. There are many beaches, and they have sand, not rocks like Nice, France (although I like rocks too). We saw stunning beaches today, all deserted except for Koukounaries, where we saw a few families, swans, a bunny and kitties. I was so happy to see a clean beach, free of plastic trash. It was a lovely sandy beach with a boat dock and yacht area, connected to a lake with graceful swans. What an added attraction and pine trees to boot! It is an idyllic island and I can see why people would want to stay here, so serene this time of year. The first bird is a Cormorant, then the Swans and then on the last turn in the airport area (we posted yesterday), Angelina spotted a Grey Heron it was beautiful (and flew off) toward the sea. Amazing Sunday.-Mona
