Today, despite the rain, we walked from our apartment to the nearest beach, Bang Thao. It took about 20 minutes to arrive there, and because of the rain, it was virtually empty. Then we read the signs, and decided to play Frisbee another day and time. The area is full of new construction, fancy hotels and much greenery. We meandered around, and found ourselves back in our area three hours later. A wedding chapel is set along the lagoon and we saw a Purple Gallinule walking across the Lily Pads. There were three horseback riders, and it reminded me of our trip to South Padre Island, Texas. Angelina, David Hunt (my cousin) and I rode horses on the beach, and it was beautiful. There were some tourist shops that we checked out called the Boat Avenue Mall adjacent to a hotel we passed by. We finished our walk at the Coffee Club and enjoyed a frappe each (coconut & mango/passion fruit). This evening we headed to the gym and cooked a healthy dinner in.
Phuket is known as the, "Pearl Of The South", and the word was formerly believed to have come from the Malayan word, Bukit, meaning mountain. It has recently been discovered that Phuket is actually a Thai word meaning a mountain (phu) of jewel (ket). The island was originally known as Ko (island) Thalang, Phuket was noted for its' rich tin ores, from which its' wealth was derived. Now, it is a vacation paradise known for white, sandy beaches, dive spots and snorkeling, crystal blue water, a tropical atmosphere and wonderful seafood. We knew that this was the rainy season, and so we'll see if we get to partake in some of the beach activities we had planned, or not. If not, we will find plenty of things to keep us busy. Such as eighth grade school work.
Rainy days can be a comfort. I am looking forward to them here! But, for now we are having cool mornings and warm afternoons. I was able to take my 4 students on a field trip Wednesday to Butte View Olive Company in Oroville to see how olives are processed and made into oil. It was interesting! And we had a picnic in a park afterwards. So relaxing! My love to you both. Christina
